Character's Full Name: Felicity Smoak
Canon Arrow
PB/Actor: Emily Bett Rickards
Character's Starting Level: 8
Character Age: 26
Physical Description: The height differences are strong with this one. Standing at 5’5” with blonde hair (not naturally blonde), Felicity Smoak is often seen wearing the apparel of a professional business woman. Hardly ever in jeans or pants, Felicity usually can be seen wearing something that is sleeveless and one piece. Her usual look seems to be more for comfort and practicality vs high fashion. She still looks stunning in her dresses and modestly accessorized, but she’s not spending forty minutes on her hair and make-up every day either. She wakes up in her tank top and pajamas, does her morning work-out, brushes her teeth, and gets ready for her day with a smart ponytail and a nice dress. Even when she’s on the job with Team Arrow, she’s seen wearing the same thing she probably wore to the office that morning. Her shoe collection doesn’t seem to be as big as standard TV characters as I’ve seen her wearing the same pair of black strappy heels on more than a few episodes. Her trademark glasses are rectangle frames, but when she does go out “in disguise” to help gain intelligence/access for Oliver and has to dress up fancier - she will opt to forgo her glasses and seems to roll a nat 20 for her disguise check.

Character's Species/Race (aka human, elf, dragonblood human, etc): Human

Character History (Pre-Veil): Arrow & Flash Wiki

Post Veil History:

2.5 Years Ago:

Felicity Smoak arrives as a vision in blue. Technically, Ray had told her she looked ridiculous, but in an extremely good way, and she's been comfortable with that phrasing up until she got a bit light-headed and then snapped out of it just in time to see a waiter passing by with a tray of champagne.

Which is wrong, because they don't serve champagne on the executive floors of Palmer Technologies and this is possibly a very bad situation that she's gotten herself into. Her fingertips brush to her clavicle, touching the diamond necklace and breathing a sigh of relief. If she's been kidnapped, it's clearly by idiots... who are throwing a party.

Did she black out? Has she been day-dreaming about going into the office again? She probably needs a drink. Thankfully, another waiter passes her and she snakes a glass off the tray and downs it quickly.

"Wait! Here," she smiles, politely, and moves to set the glass down on the tray, but she's suddenly distracted by the completely nude woman that is walking by - well, completely nude save for a Venetian Masque. The glass catches to the edge of the tray and it drops to the ground, shattering.

"Oh! God, I'm naked! I mean. No, I'm not naked. She's naked and -- very creative with her grooming. Which isn't something I should say out loud. To a stranger in a party..." Felicity's voice trails off slowly as she starts to take notice of the rest of the guests in attendance of this party. The rest of the guests and their definite lack of clothing.

Nervous laughter flits out of her as she tries desperately to avert her eyes, "It's like that Stanley Kubrick film with the single piano note score."

The moment she starts to try and explain, she can feel the press of fingertips to her elbows. "I have a headache!" She sputters out, as if she thought that would dissuade any would be amorous guests that wanted to partake in her. Thankfully, the fingers belong to security and when she learns quickly that Fidelio is not the actual password, she's escorted out and left on the driveway of the lavish mansion.

"I probably just... walked here," she says, casually to the valet. "Or manifested myself here," she says, to herself.

----

Two weeks later, she finally tracks down Oliver Queen and she convinces him to get the band back together... with just two members. She sells the 10 million dollar necklace for less than its value, but it funds them to start up again and they’ve been operating that way ever since!

Chosen Canon Point: During 3x07 Draw Back Your Bow - while Felicity is at Palmer Technologies, but before Ray shows up. Because, reasons.

Personality and Psychology:

”Felicity, you’re remarkable.”
“Thank you for remarking on it.”

Felicity Smoak is remarkable. An MIT Graduate, with a strong background in computers, Felicity Smoak was indispensable to the Arrow Team before she even knew she was a member. From finding information on a laptop that had “coffee spilled on it...” to taking a closer look at an “energy drink” - Felicity proved herself on more than one occasion to be trustworthy and capable of coming to the appropriate conclusions. Her willingness to look into things that she knows would put her into harms way (both physically and legally) only proves her desire to be on the side of what’s right - no matter who is dealing out the justice.

Felicity was raised by her mother, after her father abandoned his family when she was 8. While her mother worked countless jobs to keep their family afloat, Felicity grew slightly resentful toward her absent mother that seemed to care less and less about the direction her daughter’s life was taking. Focused on her education and less on her social status, Felicity attended MIT and dabbled in a small amount of hacking with her boyfriend and his roommate. Felicity didn’t hack, at the time, to do anything for social justice - but instead to prove her skills and improve her knowledge of how securities could be manipulated. She created viruses and worms that were extremely powerful, but not with the intent of using them against any corporation.

When in college, taking a stroll into gothic-ware, her boyfriend at the time used her program to break into the department of education. While he was in their system he had intentions of wiping out all of the debt. Felicity warned him to stop, that the kind of damage he was seeking to do would be traceable and that they’d notice very quickly. Determined to right a wrong, her boyfriend continued until Felicity physically disconnected his computer to the network. Fully capable of doing something of that level, Felicity still refused to break the law just to play Robin Hood. After her boyfriend was arrested and taken into custody, she even had thoughts of turning herself in - explaining that she had authored the program that broke into the educational system, even though she wasn’t the one that did the physical hacking. She thought, once more, that she could do the right thing because she felt that at the core of his actions had been her code. He refuses her help and she packs up her gothic college-girl hacker look and decides to focus on her future rather than her past.

”What happened to you?”
”This is me now.”

Of course, her future involved becoming the IT girl at Queen Consolidated. Somehow a multi-billion dollar company only has one IT person, but maybe she’s just that good. Felicity ends up being pulled into the fray not just by Oliver’s nightly activities (which even Felicity would agree sounded better in her head), but by Walter Steele when he grows suspicious of his wife, Moira Queen, and her activities. Felicity is given the truth about the level of conspiracy that Water is concerned about and a series of horrible lies from Oliver or Diggle in order to gain her help and keep her “safe” from harm. Little does Oliver know, but Felicity is already in way over her head. She’s only brought completely into the fold when Oliver is shot by his mother and has no where else to go - but the backseat of her car.

”I'm not going to hurt you, Felicity.”
“How do you know my name?”
“Because you know my name.”
“Oliver, oh Wow. Everything about you just became so unbelievably clear. You're bleeding.”
“I don't need to be told that.”
“You need a hospital.”
“My--my father's old factory, in the Glades.”
“No, you-- you need a doctor, not a steelworker.”
“Felicity, you have to promise me that you are going to take me to my father's factory and nowhere else.”
“Yeah, promise. Something tells me blood stains are not covered under my lease.”

Becoming part of the team was only meant to be a temporary thing for Felicity. At the time, her boss and friend Walter Steele had gone missing. She had been researching things that he had warned her could result in her death and once more her belief that the problem had started at her hacking skills, which left her at fault. It’s a trait that Felicity shows throughout the series. When the Clockman uses her own security system to blow up their base of operations, Diggle tries to reassure her that it’s not her fault. However, Felicity insists that she’s the one that set it up and allowed it to have that vulnerability that the Clockman took advantage of.

While helping Oliver look for Walter, she’s also roped into a few other cases for justice. She does put her foot down a few times, insisting that they continue to focus on their search for Walter, but after seeing the good things that Oliver is doing - even at the high cost that he operates under, she realizes that they need her and she continues helping them even after Walter is brought home safely. Felicity, in that respect, becomes more than just a member of the team, but part of the family.

Besides being an incredibly talented hacker, Felicity is a fast-talker. Most of the time, she ends up speaking before she can think of how it’s going to sound outside of her mouth. This results in a lot of badly phrased things that could be innocent, but definitely take on a different tone when placed into the context of her saying them about a physically appealing guy.

Felicity Smoak’s Greatest Hits
Oliver Queen: Felicity, hold onto me tight
I imagined you saying that under different circumstances.
Very platonic circumstances

Well, no. The last time the vigilante paid your Mom a visit, you got shot, and I got to play doctor with you.

It feels really good having you inside me... And by you I mean your voice. And by me I mean my ear. I'm going to stop talking. Right now.

One of Felicity’s strongest traits is her ability to see the good in someone or a situation. She’s always looking ahead, looking at how she can make something better instead of dwelling on the things that are wrong.

center>I don't accept that. You shouldn't either. You can't just accept things, Oliver. If I had accepted my life, I would be a cocktail waitress in Vegas like my mother, and I never would have gone to college, and I never would have moved a thousand miles away to work at Queen Consolidated, and I never would have believed some crazy guy in a hood when he told me I could be more than just some IT girl.

She’s learned to be stronger, not just physically, but mentally as well. Her willingness to put herself on the line for the cause has been something that has allowed Oliver to rely on her during the most dire of situations. When Slade returns from the island hell-bent on taking everything that Oliver loves away from him, in a twisted “eye for an eye” concept of revenge, Felicity is put into the center of the danger. Not because she’s the perfect bait, but because Oliver knows that she’ll be able to handle the pressure and the responsibility he’s giving her. She has come up against enemies that can physically overpower her, but she has managed to keep fighting and not allow them to keep her from helping out. In fact, out of all the people on Oliver’s team, she’s the most likely to call him out on his behavior.

While the heroes are sparring and working the salmon ladder at least once a day, Felicity is doing sit-ups and being proud of her own personal fitness routines. While she has compared herself to other love interests that Oliver has had, she still places the job and the safety of the city ahead of her own personal desires. However, her desires have grown more clear over the time she’s spent with Oliver on his team. What started out as simply a crush on the attractive guy with the horrible ability to lie, grew into a form of mutual respect and then into a much deeper bond. While Oliver and Felicity tried to have an actual relationship once they both admitted to their feelings, so far it has proven to be something that only puts other factors into jeopardy. Not wanting to lose someone else that he cares about (since Oliver’s track record with his love interests isn’t exactly the best), Oliver explains to his at the time enemy “the Cupid” that people like him can’t have someone in their life.

Oliver: I understand that you're hurting. And I know what it's like to want someone... but not be able to be with them. How you wish things can be different, but they can't. I can't be with you. I can't be with anyone. I have to be alone.”

While it is in her to continue to hold onto hope, to look toward the future and not allow herself to give up so easily - she feels as if she’s been waiting for so long and that they’ve tried already and if Oliver still feels this way, that she needs to look toward her future and find something that’s available. At the time, that availability is with her new boss Ray Palmer. Ray, has been keeping his flirting game on point, all the way up to purchasing the company that she used to work for and the one that she worked for temporarily after Oliver lost control of Queen Consolidated. Felicity still knows that he’s keeping secrets and after explaining to him that she’s very good at keeping secrets, he lets her in on his plans. By showing her his A.T.O.M. suit, Felicity realizes that she’s now involved with two different men that are highly invested in protecting the city without the help of the actual police department.

It could be that Felicity’s set of skills are just that indispensable to the sort of heroic types that Oliver and Ray want to be or it could be that she’s just that good at positioning herself with men like this. (Another moment where Felicity would insist that phrase wasn’t intended to come out that way. Honestly, put her and Archer in a room for an hour and he’ll say “Phrasing” at least twice.)

Felicity is capable of holding her own amongst the heroes she surrounds herself. She’s stronger than she knew she was capable of and has proven herself resilient and resourceful. She’s witty and has a healthy sense of humor - even at her own expense. Her intelligence doesn’t just stay on the books and computers side of things, but she’s able to draw conclusions from real life situations and adapt to new environments and challenges with ease. She’s good at researching and multi-tasking, but refuses to demean herself to secretary that fetches coffee. Felicity Smoak is remarkable and she knows that there are people who are important to her that know that about her.

Memories Retained or Lost:

While Felicity remembers almost everything from her life in Starling City and prior to, the memories surrounding the return and death of Sara Lance are hazy. She’s aware that Sara Lance was not killed on the boat, survived and was with Oliver at some point during his time on the island, but she doesn’t have a clear picture of how involved she was with the team upon her return to the city as “The Canary”, nor does she recall any of the implications of the League’s hold on Sara, nor their quest to find out who murdered her. Felicity knows she was “around” but if pressed for details, wouldn’t be able to provide them. Felicity also does not have a very solid recollection of Thea’s activity while she was missing. She remembers that Thea left town and that she had decided to do that prior to Slade’s men invading the city, but any details about her search for her - including the alias she used during that time - are missing.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights?

Despite arriving with an item that could be sold for half its value to enable them to start up some form of their previous “hobbies” they will have been at this for a few years at this point and Felicity will see how far the scope of issues expands. She knows that they can’t help everyone and that it’s getting more and more difficult to prioritize who needs their help the most. Whereas in Starling City they had a singular focus - keeping the city safe - here there are far too many options and Felicity is akin to a raccoon in a silverware drawer and all she sees are shiny things she wants to save.

Having the Knights as a resource, she feels like the Arrow - in all of its symbolic glory - will have a better chance at finding where they can help the most. The Knights will give them better “aim” with their efforts and more than that, it will give them a true purpose to back, instead of trying to help whoever they can at the moment.

Also, since arriving, Felicity probably set-up auto-pings for any family members or teammates - just in case they ever showed up. When Thea Queen showed up in their searches, in October, they are unaware that she’s been in Belgium under the name Mia and only believe they’ve just found her now. This would be another driving motivation for Felicity - though, that’s mostly because it would be a huge factor for Oliver and where he goes - she follows. (With a salmon ladder to set-up in front of her desk.)
